Situative Leadership in a Nutshell

A leader leads most effectively when he adapts his leadership style according to the development stage of the employee.

Employees pass through four development stages, which depend on two components: competence and commitment. The first stage is characterized by low competence and high commitment. Competence continually increases in each stage, whereas commitment decreases in the second stage, always varies in the third stage and reaches a high level again in the last stage.

This implies for the leader to adapt his leadership style according to the respective development stage of this employee. Four different leadership styles correspond to the four different stages: Conducting, Guiding, Coaching and Delegating. Thus there is no general “best” leadership style, but the “best situative” style.
