Lateral Leadership

Lateral leadership is about exerting influence without hierarchical authority. Flatter management structures, matrix organizations, project management, outsourcing, and virtual teams all mean that managers have to get things done through a greater number of people both inside and outside their organization, where the possibility of using classical leadership tools are limited. In such situations new competencies are becoming important and this partnership approach requires managers to achieve their goals by using a variety of tools and methods for influencing others. This training will help participants learn these instruments and their implementation.

OBJECTIVES

The Lateral Leadership training will enable participants to:

  • Act as a leader without disciplinary power
  • Represent their interests effectively and deliver their opinion in a convincing manner
  • Learn how to ‘read’ people and communicate with them flexibly
  • Learn the importance of networking, constructive persuasion and coalition building
  • Build up trustful relationships and learn how to generate commitment for their own purposes
  • Create shared understanding in order to balance divergent interests in a fair way
